You consider yourself a cultured individual: You enjoy wines from regions remote to Missouri, you've read some Shakespeare, and you actually like sushi. But let someone combine the words "orchestra" and/or "ballet" with that dire noun "performance," and the dry heaves cometh. What you need is a gentle nudge into the world of stringed instruments and pirouettes. Start with Sergei Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf, performed jointly by the Belleville Philharmonic Orchestra and the Belleville School of Ballet at 3 p.m. at the Scottish Rite Bodies Theatre (1549 Frank Scott Parkway West, Belleville, Illinois). This children's classic is the perfect concert introduction: Each character is represented by a different instrument, and the plot is also easy to follow (Peter catches the wolf!). John Carney of KMOX (1120 AM) narrates the program, and a showcase of cartoon music is also on the schedule.
