Change is good: This is in response to "Parade Charade," Chad Garrison's article on the decision to move the Annie Malone Parade from north St. Louis to downtown. Kudos! Finally somebody has the good common sense to move the parade downtown, where all parades should be held! As a lifelong resident of north St. Louis, I can't begin to express the elation I felt after hearing this great news. While the Annie Malone Parade is a beautiful thing to see with the marching bands, parade floats, dancers and everything, it lasts way too long, an average of seven or eight hours, tying up traffic (creating problems for ambulances or firefighters) and to be brutally honest about it, it attracts an undesirable element to our neighborhoods around Natural Bridge Road, including thieves, thugs and troublemakers. We already have enough of this crap going on now; we don't need more.

By moving the parade downtown, the vendors and others who make money on it could probably triple their profits, because downtown has such a diverse and much larger population. The parade would get much more exposure, which would translate into dollars for the Annie Malone organization. And yes, moving the parade downtown would enable the police department to provide better security.

Memo to Bennice Jones King, Freeman Bosley Sr. and all the others who are whining about the move: Things change, folks, nothing can always stay the same; you have to find a solution to make the parade better, more enjoyable and safer for those who are going to see it. Change is good and I support the Annie Malone board's decision 1,000 percent!

Webster Groove

Webster — too liberal for Lisa: Huh. The 16 in Webster Groves documentary passed me over; as a child in south city, I had only vague information that at some point Webster Groves was named the best city in America ["56 in Webster Groves," by Ellis E. Conklin]. I also thought of it as the place with the prettiest houses in St. Louis.

But what an eye-opener that anyone perceives it as rigid today! After teaching in the district and making wonderful friends there, I bypassed it to live in Kirkwood because in the end, despite the residents' charming intellects and the old money and the beautiful scenery, I found Webster a little bit too liberal for my tastes! Funny.
