Published: June 13, 2007While the Deftones ushered in the nü-metal wave of the mid-'90s, evidence of the magnitude of their involvement in this trend is missing on their fifth album, Saturday Night Wrist. The Radiohead-like softness of singer Chino Moreno that bleeds through songs such as "Xerces" and "Cherry Waves" sounds light years away from the angry youth that wrangled "7 Words" from a sandpaper throat on Adrenaline. But the two eras of the band aren't really so different — or such separate entities. Better described as a progressive rock band with a hard-line edge, the California quintet has always had room in its arsenal for experimentation. But the truth is, the members of Deftones have always been able to play like they're tearing their own guts out — only to turn down the volume and slip into sleepy, well-structured breakdowns. With old-school favorite tunes on the bill, live shows always combine the best of both worlds.
