HSB Tobacconist (6362 Delmar Boulevard, University City; 314-721-1483) is the cynosure of the Delmar Loop. Everybody who’s anybody passes through HSB’s doors at some point -- it’s as if the venerable smoke shop has its own gravity field that pulls people in to ask for directions, to get a cheap can of soda, to hear the latest neighborhood gossip, to buy a cigar. Of course, the majority of them are coming in to get some smokes -- the fact that all of the latest news is storehoused and mooted in HSB is but a lagniappe. Celebrating 33 years of being the place to be, the shop’s staff extends its normal hospitality today with the first-ever HSB Open House; from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., hors d’oeuvres, wine and free samples of various smokables are available to those of legal age. Jokes will be told, stories will be embellished, friendships will be renewed -- and you don’t have to go outside to smoke. How utterly civilized.
