It’s nice to see the family farmer getting some respect. Musicians, such as John Mellencamp, Willie Nelson and Neil Young, and writers, such as Wendell Berry and Barbara Kingsolver, have done a lot to bring the struggles of the independent farmer to a higher level of public awareness. So has the fast-spreading phenomenon of the local farmer’s market, where city dwellers and suburbanites can buy the bounty of the land straight from the folks who grow it. Whole Foods Market (1601 South Brentwood Boulevard, Brentwood; 314-968-7744 or www.wholefoodsmarket.com) hosts a class, “Flavors from Our Farmer’s Market,” this evening that should further clarify the many benefits of buying local to those still new to the idea. Culinary instructor Elisabeth Ottolini discusses the plenitude of organic produce and meat harvested right here in Missouri, and provides some recipe ideas. The cost of the class, which runs from 6:30 to 8 p.m., is $40.
