Will New Line Theatre change its -- let’s say “edgy” -- ways now that the company has moved its productions into the Ivory Theatre (7622 Michigan Avenue), a former church? Not hardly. Scott Miller and Company pop the cherry on their new digs with a new revue entitled Sex, Drugs and Rock & Roll -- that about covers everything, doesn’t it? Miller notes that this revue is not a “book musical” with defined characters following a narrative arc, but each performer does have a consistency of character that helps convey the overall thrust of the show. The basic flow of the story takes place in three acts -- “Sex,” “Drugs” and “Rock & Roll” -- that explore the joys and difficulties inherent in how humanity deals with the universal need to turn on, tune out and get felt up. The songs range from the familiar (“Over at the Frankenstein Place” from The Rocky Horror Picture Show) to the obscure (“Pitch for Pot,” a song cut from The Nervous Set), but they all strive to answer the big question: Why do we do these things to ourselves in the name of gratification? The answers are many and varied and musical. Sex, Drugs and Rock & Roll gets your motor runnin’ at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday (September 27 through October 20), and tickets are $10 to $18.
