    "Why I'm No Longer a Brain-Dead Liberal"

An election-season essay from one of America's greatest playwrights.

    By David Mamet

"From Glasgow to the Hebrides, when Scottish bagpipes wail/And drummers drum for Robert Burns, 'tis time to drink Scotch Ale." The opening lines of Tom Schlafly's ode to the Scottish bard Robert Burns are a fitting introduction to the annual celebration of Burns Night at the Schlafly Tap Room (2100 Locust Street; www.schlafly.com or 314-241-2337). This special evening brings Scottish food (neeps and tatties, leeks and haggis), folks (men in kilts) and fun (traditional music by Duddybreeks) together from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. The haggis will be "piped," Schlafly's Scotch Ale will be tapped, and bonny lads and lassies will raise the Selkirk blessing to its author, the ploughman poet: "Some hae meat and canna eat,/And some would eat that want it;/But we hae meat, and we can eat,/Sae let the Lord be thankit."
