Patrick Sweany is an Ohio roots-blues revivalist with an old soul and a deep voice to match. He compares his eponymous band's sound to "Lightnin' Hopkins mixed with Solomon Burke, with Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys thrown in" and his band's latest LP, Every Hour is a Dollar Gone, sounds like the work of straight-A students who burned some midnight oil taking notes on John Fogerty and Hound Dog Taylor, too. Sweany is also under sway of a newer name in blues: Black Keys frontman Dan Auerbach produced Hour and co-produced 2006's C'mon C'mere with Delta throwback Jimbo Mathus. On that disc, Clint Alguire whomps a 28-inch bass drum, and while Bob Basone massages a deep baritone guitar, Sweany sings lively songs for the brokenhearted and flat-busted-broke. A rattling rhythm shakes up "Nobody Dance," "Over but the Cryin'" can hold its own against any road-worn slow-dance tune, and Sweany's primal screams shake the shack on "Bounce."
