Sleep State turned heads last year with the release of its Fuckin' Pervert EP, but the group's new full-length, U.S. Mint (which it recorded at Shine Studios with Peter Dycus) pretty much cements its status as one of the premier experimental acts performing around town. Half-spoken, half-shouted vocals (think Suicidal Tendencies) howl above slate-gray music that chaotically blends free-jazz, no-wave skronk, grindcore, dirgey hardcore and even punky blues. Not for the faint of heart — but certainly rewarding for those who dare to listen.
